Extension of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights Violations

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Presidential commission of inquiry tasked with investigating human rights violations has been granted an extension until August 31, 2023. The extension was declared through an extraordinary gazette announcement. Initially, the commission's tenure was scheduled to conclude on July 21, 2021, but it has been extended multiple times.

On January 20, 2021, the Presidential commission of inquiry was established by then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Its primary objective is to present a comprehensive report and recommendations based on previous investigations into human rights issues in Sri Lanka.

The commission comprises distinguished members, including Supreme Court Judge M.H.M.D. Nawaz, retired Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando, and retired District Secretary Nimal Abeysiri. Later, Yogeswari Patkunarajah was appointed as its commissioner to enhance its capabilities.
