Colombo (Sri Lanka) - Grammy award-winning Irish singer Sinead O'Connor died on Wednesday (28th) aged 56, international media reported.
O'Connor shot to fame in 1990 when her hit "Nothing compares to you" stormed the world's music charts all the way to number one, earning her numerous accolades.
With her distinctive shaven head, O'Connor lived a controversial life, changing her religion twice, being ordained a priest in a breakaway Catholic sect, marrying four times, and tearing up a picture of the pope on Saturday Night Live for which she was banned by NBC and drew much public outrage. She was also an activist for human rights, women's rights and child abuse.
She later embraced Islam and changed her name to Shuhada Sadaqat but continued to sing under the name Sinead O'Connor.
