COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Animal Production and Health addresses concerns regarding the spread of a viral disease among pigs in the Western Province, reassuring the public that it has not reached epidemic levels. Dr. Hemalee Kotalawala, the director of the department, appeals for calm, emphasizing that there is no need for undue panic.

Crucially, Dr. Kotalawala affirms that there is no risk of the viral disease spreading to humans, providing further reassurance to the public. The focus of attention remains solely on the well-being and health of the affected pig population.

The viral disease, known as TRRS, primarily affects the respiratory system of pigs. While it poses a significant concern, Dr. Kotalawala underscores that immediate action has been taken to import the necessary vaccines to combat the virus effectively.
