Sri Lanka whitewash Ireland with second innings victory

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka sealed the match Test series against Ireland by completing a 100th Test win on Friday (28).

Sri Lanka defeated Ireland by an innings and 280 runs in the first match, and the second Test between the two sides also ended in favour of the hosts, with Sri Lanka emerging victorious by an innings and 10 runs.

After suffering an innigs defeat in the first test at Galle  Ireland did better second time round, keeping the hosts at bay for five sessions to amass 492 runs in their first innings.

But Sri Lanka came out all guns blazing and piled 704-3 in 151 overs before declaring the innings closed.

Captain Dimuth Karunaratne reached his 16th Test Century and scored 115 runs.

Nishan Madushka posted his maiden test double hundred with 205 runs.

Kusal Mendis smashed 11 sixes and 18 fours to reach his test double hundred of 245 runs, and entered the record books as the Sri Lankan batsman with the highest number of sixes in a test innings.

Angelo Mathewa was unbeaten on 100 runs.

Ireland were back on the Galle pitch to avoid an innings defeat, and were bundles out for 202 runs.

Ramesh Mendis picked up 5 wickets, and Asitha Fernando bagged 3 wickets, while Prabath Jayasuriya picked up 2 wickets.

Prabath Jayasuriya has now taken 50 wickets in seven Tests to claim the record for reaching the mark in fewer matches than any other spinner.

Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya smashed a 71-year-old record when he dismissed Ireland’s Paul Stirling to claim his 50th Test wicket on the final day of the second Test in Galle.

While Prabath was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for his sensational bowling performance, Kusal Mendis was declared ‘Player of the Series’.
