COLOMBO (News 1st) - The National Water Supply and Drainage Board has disconnected the supply of water for over 40,000 consumers who have failed to settle their water bills for months.
"The dues amount to over Rs. 1.6 billion," a senior official at the National Water Supply and Drainage Board said.
"The NWSDB has taken steps to file cases against 15,000 of them, that include domestic consumers, businesses and government institutions," he said.
The water bill settlement rate had dropped by 40% since the price hike in September 2022.
The total amount of dues to be settled to the NWSDB stands at about Rs. 8.4 billion.
"The NWSDB is currently facing serious financial issues due to this," he added.
