COLOMBO (News 1st); Heavy rains have lashed parts of Sri Lanka, causing flooding and landslides.

Sixteen schools in the Northern Province have been temporarily closed as a result of the bad weather.

The provincial governor's office said that eight schools in Kilinochchi, one school in Vavnia, and seven schools in Mulathivu have been shut down. The schools will be reopened once the rain subsides.

The Meteorological Department said that there is a temporary reduction in the existing rain conditions, but there may be several periods of rain today in the North, East, and Uva provinces as well as in Polonnaruwa and Matale districts.

Rains continue to batter Sri Lanka, impacting at least 2,394 families and 8,196 individuals across 11 districts.

Authorities have closed schools, deployed relief teams, and issued warnings as the bad weather persists.

The affected districts include Badulla, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Mannar, Jaffna, Trincomalee, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Puttalam, and Kurunegala. Concerns regarding flooding and landslides remain high, particularly in low-lying areas.
