Sri Lankan authorities arrest 2,166 in drug sweep

COLOMBO (News 1st);  In a sweeping nationwide operation dubbed "Justice" Sri Lankan security forces apprehended a staggering 2,166 individuals suspected of involvement in drug offenses over a 24-hour period starting Monday (18) morning.

The operation took place from 12:30 AM on Monday (18) to 12:30 AM on Tuesday (19).

The operation, spanning across the entire island, yielded impressive results, netting a one kilogram and 370 grams of heroin, along with significant quantities of other illicit substances.

Amongst the haul were 556 grams of crystal meth (ice), 7 kilograms and 800 grams of ganja / marijuana, 3 kilograms and 500 grams of Mawa, and 1,075 narcotic pills.

The Ministry of Public Security confirmed that 66 individuals arrested during the operation will be held for further investigation under detention orders. 

Additionally, asset investigations have been initiated against 14 of the suspects.

The authorities reported referring 226 suspects for appropriate rehabilitation treatment programs. 

Notably, the operation saw the capture of 169 individuals already listed as suspects by the Police Narcotics Bureau and the Special Bureau.
