Landslide risk surrounding several main roads

COLOMBO (News 1st); The National Building Research Organization said there is a landslide risk surrounding several main roads.

Senior Geologist of the Landslide Research and Risk Management Division Laksiri Indrathilaka advised the public to remain vigilant while traveling on those roads.

The National Building Research Organization has informed the public to refrain from using the Gannoruwa - Gohagoda main road at night and during showers, due to the risk of earth slips and landslides.

Assistant Director of the Kandy District Disaster Management Unit Indika Ranaweera said mounds of earth had collapsed on to the Gannoruwa - Gohagoda road on several occasions, due to heavy showers.

He advised people to use alternative routes.

Meanwhile, Laksiri Indrathilaka said around 150 families have been evacuated to safe places due to the risk of landslides.
