COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's Parliament Speaker has decided to suspend a ruling party member for breach of discipline in parliament on Tuesday (21), during the budget debate.

"I strongly condemn the act that breached discipline in the parliament yesterday. As per Standing Order 146, and the powers vested in me, I order to suspend the parliament service of MP Sanath Nishantha for a period of two weeks from today (22)," said the Speaker.

Parliamentary proceedings on the final day (21) of the second reading of the Budget for the year 2024, were delayed for a few minutes, due to chaos in the house following a statement made by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

The Opposition Leader raised a question on the Supreme Court ruling on Sri Lanka's bankruptcy, which cited that fundamental rights were violated through economic decisions taken from 2019-2022.

Members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna protested against the statement.

While the Parliamentarians were protesting, State Minister Sanath Nishantha was seen taking away the document containing the opposition leader's statement
