23 hospitalized following fire in Pettah

COLOMBO (News 1st); 23 people have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital after a fire broke out in a shopping complex on 2nd Cross Street, Pettah.

Deputy Director of the Hospital Dr. Rukshan Bellana said they were admitted to the hospital due to minor burns and breathing difficulties.

The fire broke out at the shopping complex on 2nd Cross Street, on Friday (27) morning.

News 1st correspondent said the shopping complex, with around 10 shops, was destroyed.

Around 11 fire engines of the Colombo Fire Service Department were deployed to douse the fire.

Sri Lanka Police, Sri Lanka Air Force and Fire Service Department officers worked together to control the fire and rescue those within the shopping complex.

The Disaster Management Center said the fire has been brought under control.

The cause of the fire has not been revealed thus far.
