Removal of salinity barrier on Nilwala River commences

COLOMBO (News 1st); Matara District Secretary Y Wickramasiri said the removal of a section of the salinity barrier across the Nilwala River will commence on Friday (20).

He said it will be done under the supervision of the Sri Lanka Army, Irrigation Department and National Water Supply and Drainage Board, and under the coordination of the Matara District Secretariat.

People alleged that the salinity barrier built on the Nilwala River is the main reason that the flood waters in the Matara district did not recede for several days.
