COLOMBO (News 1st): A special meeting has been convened this morning to identify urgent measures to address the flooding situation in Colombo.

Mayor of Colombo Vraie Cally Balthazaar said representatives of all relevant government institutions will participate in the discussion.

She said the meeting was convened following the flooding experienced in several parts of the city after heavy rainfall last evening.

The Mayor explained that Colombo’s drainage system is designed to accommodate rainfall of approximately 30 millimetres. However, the city received nearly four times that amount, resulting in an exceptional situation.

Acknowledging the significant disruption caused to residents, she said the Colombo Municipal Council intends to work closely with relevant government institutions to find immediate solutions.

Representatives of the police, the Tri-Forces, Divisional Secretariats, the Governor’s Office, the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation and the Urban Development Authority are among those expected to take part in the discussions.

The meeting will focus particularly on measures to improve drainage and address issues relating to the city’s canal network and road infrastructure.
