COLOMBO (News 1st): Members of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Governance, Justice and Civil Protection have commenced inspections of prisons as part of efforts to identify solutions to overcrowding in correctional facilities.

Accordingly, committee members inspected the Colombo Remand Prison, New Magazine Prison, Welikada Prison and the Prison Hospital yesterday.

The inspections are aimed at assessing prison conditions and identifying areas that require improvement.

The review covers kitchen operations, healthcare facilities, the condition of prison buildings, including structures deemed unsafe, and drainage systems used for wastewater disposal.

The committee is also examining the facilities available to prison officers and the challenges they face in carrying out their duties.
