COLOMBO (News 1st); The Election Commission says it has identified the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) as a party facing an internal dispute.
The Commission stated that several factions of the party were summoned before the Election Commission today (6) and questioned regarding the matter.
Those present included Dayasiri Jayasekara, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, and Duminda Dissanayake.
A political party facing an internal dispute cannot submit nominations for an upcoming election.
When a party experiencing an internal conflict seeks to submit nominations for an election, its representatives must appear before the Election Commission and reach an agreement on resolving the dispute.
The Election Commission further stated that if the dispute cannot be resolved, the party concerned could lose the opportunity to submit nominations for that election.
The Election Commission also said that the same procedure will be followed in the case of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party moving forward.
