COLOMBO (News1st): Chief Inspector of Police, Varuni Bogahawatta and four others have been remanded until November 20.
This order was issued after they were produced before Matara Magistrate Chathura Dissanayake.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) recently arrested Varuni Bogahawatta after she failed to explain the source of funds used to purchase a vehicle and settle its lease installments.
Moreover, the CID informed the court that investigations revealed that large sums of money had been deposited into the suspect's bank accounts.
Although the suspect, Varuni Bogahawatta, submitted documents claiming her sister who is overseas had sent the money, the CID stated that investigations revealed another party had repeatedly paid the lease installments.
Stating that monthly installments equal to her salary had been paid to the financial institution from which the lease facility for her car was obtained, the CID requested that the suspects be further remanded as investigations into the incident were not yet concluded.
Having considered the facts presented, the Magistrate ordered that all suspects be remanded until the 20th.
In addition, the Honda Vezel motor vehicle belonging to Varuni Bogahawatta, who serves as the Officer in Charge of the Administration Unit at the Kotawila Police Station, was recently seized by the Police Financial and Commercial Crime Investigation Division.
