Customs Probes Illegal Import of Over 80kg of Gold

COLOMBO (News1st); Sri Lanka Customs has launched a wide-ranging investigation into an incident involving the illegal importation of gold into the country using funds belonging to Jeffrey Mohamed, who was accused of siphoning off large sums of US dollars abroad.

Sri Lanka Customs stated that the investigation is currently being conducted regarding a gold jewelry shop owner in Pettah.

Moreover, Initial investigations have revealed that he had brought over 80 kilograms of gold into the country.

Police stated that several teams have now commenced investigations to locate the gold.

Furthermore, Jeffrey Mohamed, accused of setting up 36 shell companies to illegally transfer dollars abroad under the guise of imports, is currently in remand custody.
