COLOMBO (News 1st); Criminal masterminds directing organized crime and drug trafficking operations from overseas are now firmly in the sights of Sri Lankan authorities, with special operations being carried out in collaboration with international law enforcement agencies to bring them back to the country, Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala revealed in Parliament on Friday.
Addressing concerns over recent shootings and violent crimes, the minister said many of the killings reported across the country originate from escalating conflicts between underworld groups and rival drug trafficking networks. He stressed that the government's primary objective remains the protection of the public and the disruption of criminal networks that continue to threaten public safety.
Wijepala disclosed that 17 Special Task Force teams have been deployed specifically to combat organized crime and underworld activity, while authorities have simultaneously strengthened mechanisms to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for directing criminal operations.
According to the minister, a significant challenge facing investigators is that many of the individuals orchestrating crimes are operating from foreign countries, beyond Sri Lanka's borders. However, he said the government has already taken all necessary measures to bring those individuals back to face justice.
