COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of Kawantissa, a majestic tusker who captured the hearts of people across the country.
Regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s largest and tallest wild elephants, Kawantissa was a national treasure, admired for his magnificent presence and beloved by the public.
He had also gained widespread popularity on social media.
Kawantissa tragically succumbed to severe injuries sustained from gunshot wounds.
The tusker was found collapsed in a paddy field this morning in an area within the Siyambalangamuwa Wildlife Zone.
Reports indicate that he had travelled approximately two kilometres from the location where he received medical treatment yesterday before collapsing.
Although the gunshot wound to his front right leg had shown signs of healing following treatment, Kawantissa’s condition deteriorated in recent days.
His refusal to eat reportedly led to severe dehydration, leaving him in a critical condition despite efforts to treat his injury.
Authorities had been making arrangements to bring a medical team from Thailand to Sri Lanka to provide specialised treatment in a bid to save the magnificent animal.
Despite these efforts, Kawantissa’s life came to a tragic end, leaving behind a deep sense of sorrow among wildlife enthusiasts and people across the nation.
The loss of this magnificent tusker is a heartbreaking reminder of the threats faced by Sri Lanka’s wildlife and the urgent need to protect these gentle giants for future generations.
