Pilot Project To Launch Driver Demerit Points System For Traffic Offenses

COLOMBO (News 1st): A pilot project has been initiated to introduce a driver demerit points system for traffic offenses.

This project will be implemented from the 1st of next month until March next year.

A special press conference was convened today to raise awareness about this national program, which has been launched for transport safety.

Speaking on the initiative, Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake stated that the system was developed following joint discussions between the Police and the Ministry, drawing inspiration from research on global best practices. 

Under this system, points will be deducted based on the frequency and severity of traffic violations committed by drivers during the six-month pilot period, with significant point deductions resulting in a temporary license suspension.
