COLOMBO (News 1st); A small spotted cat that was once mistaken for a household pet has become the first newly discovered feline species in more than a century, stunning scientists and rewriting what is known about the evolution of wild cats in the Americas.
The remarkable discovery began in 2016 when Bolivian biologist and National Geographic Explorer Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz received an unexpected phone call from a wildlife sanctuary about what staff described as a "weird cat."
The animal had been rescued years earlier after a local man found it as a kitten near a forest road in Bolivia. Believing it to be a domestic cat, he took it home and raised it. However, as the animal grew older, it became increasingly clear that it was no ordinary pet. Realizing it belonged in the wild, the man eventually handed it over to the Senda Verde wildlife sanctuary in the foothills of the Bolivian Andes.
Curious about the unusual animal, Nogales-Ascarrunz traveled to the sanctuary to see it for herself. The cat immediately stood out. It had a compact face, short rounded ears, unusually long whiskers, and a coat covered in striking leopard-like spots. Fascinated by its appearance, she photographed it extensively.
"I took a hundred pictures of it," she later recalled. "I was so fascinated."
At the time, the scientist assumed the animal belonged to a known species called Leopardus tigrinus, commonly known as the tiger cat or oncilla, a small spotted wild cat thought to range across much of Central and South America.
Years later, while preparing a guide to Bolivia's wild cats, Nogales-Ascarrunz noticed something unusual. The animal she had photographed looked noticeably different from tiger cats documented in neighboring Brazil. Its distinctive coat pattern featured much larger rosettes than expected.
The observation sparked a scientific mystery that would eventually lead to one of the most significant wildlife discoveries of the century.
After developing advanced genetic analysis skills and collaborating with Brazilian geneticist Eduardo Eizirik and Belgian researcher Jonas Lescroart, Nogales-Ascarrunz and her team undertook a detailed study of the animal's DNA. Their findings revealed something extraordinary. The cat was not simply a variation of an existing species. It represented an entirely new branch of the feline family tree.
The researchers have proposed the name Leopardus tilcayo for the species, adopting the name long used by local communities in Bolivia. Interestingly, even local residents were unable to explain the origin of the word.
"We asked the local people why they call it tilcayo, and they said their grandparents called it that, so they did too," Nogales-Ascarrunz explained.
The newly identified species inhabits Bolivia's Yungas forests, a biodiverse region located on the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains. Beyond its habitat, however, very little is known. Scientists do not yet fully understand what the cats eat, how they reproduce, what predators they face, or even how many remain in the wild.
That mystery makes the discovery even more compelling.
What sets this finding apart is that it is not the reclassification of a previously known species or a correction of past scientific records. Instead, it is a genuinely new mammal species identified in modern times, something exceptionally rare, particularly within a well-studied group such as wild cats.
The discovery also challenges long-standing assumptions about tiger cats. Genetic analysis of 38 individuals across the Leopardus genus revealed that Leopardus tilcayo diverged from other tiger cat species roughly 1.4 million years ago. Scientists say that level of evolutionary separation is comparable to the difference between modern lions and the extinct cave lions that once roamed Europe.
The findings have dramatically reshaped the understanding of tiger cat evolution. What scientists once considered a single species spread across much of Latin America is now believed to be a complex made up of five distinct species.
Researchers believe the implications go far beyond a single discovery. The same advanced genetic techniques could lead to the identification of additional hidden wild cat species in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world. Some experts even suspect that animals currently classified as a single species may actually represent several genetically distinct species.
Beyond its scientific significance, the discovery carries major conservation implications. A species' conservation status is heavily influenced by its geographic range and population size. When one widespread species is divided into several smaller, more localized species, each population becomes more vulnerable to extinction.
Conservationists warn that recognizing more species often reveals that wildlife populations are far smaller and more threatened than previously believed, increasing the urgency for protection measures.
For Nogales-Ascarrunz, however, the discovery is about more than science. It is a reminder that the natural world still holds remarkable secrets waiting to be uncovered.
"Our world is extremely complex," she said. "Sometimes we think that most of it is known, that there's not a whole lot left to discover. But in fact, it's the other way around."
The discovery of Leopardus tilcayo serves as a powerful reminder that even among one of the world's most recognizable animal families, significant mysteries remain hidden. A small five-pound wild cat found by chance on a roadside has not only become the first new feline species discovered in over 100 years but has also opened a new chapter in scientists' understanding of the world's elusive wild cats.
As researchers continue their search, experts believe the forests of the world may still be hiding species that science has yet to name, understand, and protect.
