Court Orders Probe Into Wimal’s Remarks on Namal Rajapaksa Remand

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Colombo Chief Magistrate has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately investigate whether a statement made by politician Wimal Weerawansa criticizing the remanding of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa amounted to contempt of court.

The order was issued after the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) requested the Colombo Magistrate’s Court to examine the matter.

The request was made when the case filed against Rajapaksa over the alleged Airbus bribery transaction was taken up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today.

According to the Bribery Commission, the statement in question was made by Weerawansa during an SLPP meeting held in Anuradhapura on September 12, where he reportedly criticized the court’s decision to remand Rajapaksa.

Meanwhile, the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court also ordered that Namal Rajapaksa be further remanded until September 29.

Rajapaksa was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption on September 4 in connection with an ongoing investigation into allegations that he accepted a Rs. 100 million bribe linked to a transaction involving the purchase of aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.
