COLOMBO (News 1st) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath has assured that the temporary tax restrictions imposed on vehicle imports will be removed once the ongoing conflict situation in the Middle East comes to an end.
The Minister made these remarks while attending the Motor Rally 2026 vehicle exhibition organized by the Vehicle Importers' Association of Sri Lanka in Colombo yesterday.
The event was organized with the primary objective of promoting a responsible motoring culture and disciplined driving practices within Sri Lankan society.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Minister Herath said the Government's vision is to create a country where every citizen has the opportunity to own and use a vehicle of their own.
He recalled that just two years ago Sri Lanka was unable to import any vehicles, with imports having been completely suspended amid the country's economic crisis.
The Minister explained that certain tax-related limitations were introduced due to the unexpected conflict situation in the Middle East, which created concerns over economic stability and foreign exchange management.
However, he stressed that these measures are only temporary.
The Minister further emphasized that Sri Lanka's economy has achieved considerable stability in a short period and is continuing on a path towards greater strength.
