Sri Lanka Invesitgating Three Chinese-Linked Cases | Port City Abduction, Body Discovery and Rs. 20 Mn Theft

COLOMBO (News 1st); A series of incidents involving Chinese nationals has triggered multiple police investigations across Sri Lanka, with authorities probing an alleged abduction in Colombo Port City, the disappearance of one Chinese national, the discovery of a body believed to be that of a Chinese citizen in Eheliyagoda, and a separate Rs. 20 million theft in Colombo.

According to police, three Chinese nationals had arrived at Colombo Port City on the night of July 22 and were engaged in fishing from a bridge located within the Port City premises.

The men had reportedly continued fishing until between 2.00 a.m. and 3.00 a.m. on Thursday (23), when a black van arrived at the location. Police sources said that approximately 15 to 20 Chinese nationals, reportedly with their faces covered, had arrived in the vehicle.

It is alleged that the group then covered the faces of the three men who had been fishing before forcing them into the van and anther vehicle. The three individuals were subsequently taken away from the area.

Investigators said two of the Chinese nationals were later abandoned by the roadside and subsequently reported the incident to the Colombo Harbour Police. The two men had allegedly been assaulted during the incident.

However, as of Thursday evening, there had been no official information regarding the whereabouts of the third Chinese national, prompting police to continue efforts to trace him and establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction.

Meanwhile, police are also investigating the discovery of a body believed to be that of a Chinese national in the Karadana area of Eheliyagoda.

The body was found in a jungle area and was reportedly blindfolded and bound when discovered. Authorities suspect the deceased may be a Chinese citizen, although formal identification procedures are continuing.

Police have stressed that there is currently no confirmation that the body is connected to the Port City abduction incident or that it belongs to the Chinese national who remains unaccounted for following the alleged kidnapping. Investigations are ongoing to establish the identity of the deceased and determine the circumstances that led to the death.

The developments come against the backdrop of another investigation involving Chinese nationals. On July 21, a sum of Rs. 20 million being transported by a Chinese national in the Colpetty area was allegedly stolen by a group of individuals.

Among those arrested in connection with that case is Anuda Bandara, the son of former State Minister Shantha Bandara.

According to police sources, another Chinese national is also believed to be linked to the alleged theft of the Rs. 20 million. Investigators are currently conducting operations to locate and arrest the suspect.

Authorities are additionally seeking to determine how the Chinese national came into possession of the Rs. 20 million and to identify the source of the funds.

Police have launched separate investigations into the Port City abduction, the missing Chinese national, the discovery of the body in Eheliyagoda and the Rs. 20 million theft.
