COLOMBO (News 1st); Six suspects arrested over the illegal import and transportation of a large stock of pharmaceutical creams valued at approximately Rs. 48.3 million have been remanded until the 30th of this month by the Negombo Additional Magistrate’s Court.
The order was issued by Negombo Additional Magistrate Subhani Abeysinghe following their arrest in connection with the smuggling operation.
According to investigators, the suspects were apprehended on the 24th near the Lellama area, in Pitipana, Dungalpitiya based on intelligence received by the Negombo Crimes Division.
The stock of creams, manufactured in India and used for skin-related treatments, had reportedly been smuggled into the country by sea using three dinghy boats before being transported inland in a refrigerated lorry.
Investigating officers informed court that all six suspects are residents of the Pitipana area and are engaged in the fishing industry.
Authorities stated that the suspects have been charged with illegally importing the pharmaceutical stock into Sri Lanka without paying customs duties, without obtaining proper approval from the National Medicines Regulatory Authority, and without undergoing required quality checks.
Police also confirmed that a lorry and two boats used in the smuggling operation were taken into custody.
Investigators requested the court to remand the suspects further as inquiries are still ongoing.
Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered that the suspects be remanded until the 30th and directed officials to present progress on the investigation at the next hearing.
