COLOMBO (News 1st):The former Commander of the Navy, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, has informed the Bribery Commission that he is unable to appear before it today, citing a medical condition.

He had been summoned by the Commission in connection with an investigation into how Yoshitha Rajapaksa was recruited as an executive officer in the Sri Lanka Navy—allegedly by altering the required qualifications—and how he received training at the Britannia Royal Naval College, which involved the alleged misuse of government funds.

Wasantha Karannagoda had previously been summoned to the Bribery Commission on the 16th of June however, he refused to appear on that day, stating that he had not received the summons letter.

Yoshitha Rajapaksa was arrested on the 17th of June, regarding the same incident and was subsequently released on three personal sureties of Rs. 5 million each after being produced before the court.
