PARO, Bhutan – The 10th ABU Media Summit on Climate Action & Disaster Prevention and ABU AI Forum officially commenced on June 16, 2026, at the historic Dungkar Dzong in Paro, Bhutan, bringing together leading media executives, policymakers, and technology experts from across the Asia-Pacific region.
The three-day summit, held from June 16 to 18, focuses on climate action, disaster prevention, and the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the media industry.
Delivering the welcome address at the opening ceremony was Dorji Tashi, Chief Executive Officer of the Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS). Special addresses were also delivered by Ahmed Nadeem, Secretary-General of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), and Dasho Tashi Wangmo, Secretary of Bhutan’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment.
Newsfirst Brings Sri Lankan Experience to the Global Stage
Representing Sri Lanka and the Maharaja Media Network, Janitha Mendis, Director – New Media at Newsfirst, participated as an invited speaker in the key panel discussion titled “Media Saving Lives: Lessons from the Asia-Pacific.”
During the session, Janitha presented Newsfirst’s Digital-First Newsroom Strategy, highlighting how the organization has successfully integrated traditional television broadcasting with digital platforms to deliver real-time information during national emergencies and disaster situations.
He explained how Newsfirst has leveraged its combined television and digital infrastructure to ensure rapid dissemination of critical information, helping communities stay informed and enhancing public safety during times of crisis.
The presentation also showcased Newsfirst’s role beyond conventional broadcasting, emphasizing its practical contributions to disaster response, relief efforts, and community engagement during emergencies.
Newsfirst’s innovative approach to disaster communication and public service journalism received significant recognition from international media leaders attending the summit, reinforcing its position as a leading example of digital transformation in the broadcasting industry.
The summit continues with discussions on climate resilience, disaster preparedness, media innovation, and the ethical adoption of AI technologies across the Asia-Pacific broadcasting sector.
