COLOMBO (News 1st); US President Donald Trump has called for an immediate halt to hostilities between Iran and Israel as missile exchanges between the two nations intensify, pushing an already fragile ceasefire closer to collapse.
In a brief but urgent message posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump urged both sides to de-escalate without delay. “Israel and Iran must immediately stop ‘shooting’,” he said, as fears mount over a potential full-scale regional escalation.
The appeal comes at a critical juncture, with the current ceasefire, first brokered on April 8, appearing more vulnerable than at any point in the past seven weeks.
The ongoing hostilities are unfolding against the backdrop of a prolonged United States-Israel military campaign against Iran, which entered its 101st day on Monday.
Iranian state media reported a series of powerful explosions across key cities, including at least two major blasts in the capital Tehran and three in Isfahan.
Additional explosions were also reported in Tabriz, signaling the widening geographic spread of the strikes. The Israeli military confirmed that it had carried out operations targeting what it described as military sites in western and central Iran.
Further developments indicate that critical infrastructure has also been hit. A security official in Iran’s southwestern Khuzestan province told Fars news agency that Israeli forces struck the Karun Petrochemical Company in Mahshahr, an attack later confirmed by the Israeli army.
Amid reports of a separate explosion at the Al-Kharj airbase in Saudi Arabia, Iran denied any involvement. The country’s IRIB broadcaster quoted a military official stating that “Iran has not fired any shots,” suggesting the possibility of broader regional tensions or misattribution of attacks.
At the same time, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had launched retaliatory strikes on Israeli airbases, including Nevatim and Tel Nof, in response to earlier attacks on radar facilities within Iranian territory.
Regional tensions were further highlighted by reports from Israeli media outlets, including Channel 12 and Ynet News, which said a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted, pointing to the potential involvement of additional actors in the conflict.
