COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka has been awarded special recognition by the World Health Organization (WHO) for its achievements in the public health sector, particularly in reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis to a level where it is no longer considered a public health concern.

The recognition was granted in line with WHO-established standards and the recommendations of global advisory committees, acknowledging Sri Lanka’s sustained progress in addressing what was once a significant public health issue.

The award was presented today (19) during the 79th World Health Assembly currently being held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The certificate of recognition was handed over by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.
