COLOMBO (News 1st); The investigation into the death of former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena has been handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division.
Police stated that a post-mortem examination is currently being carried out.
Kapila Chandrasena’s body was found yesterday morning at a relative’s residence on Fifth Lane in Kollupitiya.
Kapila Chandrasena, who served as the CEO of SriLankan Airlines, had been accused of accepting a bribe of US$ 2 million in connection with the purchase of Airbus aircraft for the airline in 2013.
He had been remanded after being arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and was later released on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court on the 5th of May, on a cash bail of Rs. 500,000 and three surety bails of Rs. 10 million rupees each.
Following his release on bail, investigations revealed that two individuals had paid a sum of Rs. 15,000 each to the two persons who had appeared as sureties to the sum of 10 million rupees each.
The Commission then requested court permission to suspend the suspect’s bail, stating that he had violated the bail conditions and breached the trust of the court. The Commission also requested that he be remanded until the conclusion of the case under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama had ordered the suspect to be re-arrested and produced before the court, and also directed the immediate execution of the warrant.
Kapila Chandrasena had died while arrangements were being made for his re-arrest.
