CID Warns of Rising Police-Impersonation Cyber Scams

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has stated that there is a rise in complaints regarding individuals posing as police officers to defraud people of their money.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) W.P. Jayanethsiri stated that cybercriminals carry out these scams by claiming that an investigation is underway against an individual and demanding money to either mitigate the punishment or provide some form of relief.

He further noted that 10,015 complaints related to cybercrime were received last year, out of which 3,100 were specifically regarding cyber scams.
