COLOMBO (News 1st); The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive political engagement in Sri Lanka, clarifying that invitations for discussions with Members of Parliament were extended to all political parties, including the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

Responding to a question on the apparent absence of SJB representatives during a recent engagement in Parliament, IMF Mission Chief for Sri Lanka Evan Papageorgiou emphasized that the IMF values dialogue with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, particularly elected representatives and political leaders.

Papageorgiou said such engagements are an important component of the IMF’s outreach efforts and play a crucial role in ensuring that diverse perspectives are reflected in Sri Lanka’s economic reform program. He noted that these discussions help the IMF better understand the range of views surrounding the country’s economic challenges and the ongoing reform process.

Addressing the issue of participation, the IMF Mission Chief stated that invitations were extended to all political parties and political party leaders, with arrangements made through the Speaker’s Office of Parliament. He expressed appreciation for the time and presence of those who took part in the meetings.

During the parliamentary discussions, a wide range of policy issues were raised, including the design of the fuel rationing system, the pace and composition of fiscal consolidation, concerns over the under-execution of capital spending, and the importance of strengthening anti-corruption efforts.

Papageorgiou said the IMF team both shared remarks and listened directly to the views of Members of Parliament.+

He described the tone of the engagement as constructive and thoughtful, noting that the IMF team was encouraged by the quality of the dialogue with parliamentarians and political leaders. Papageorgiou added that the IMF looks forward to continuing these conversations as part of its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and open engagement with all stakeholders. On the 2nd of April, the IMF delegation met with Party Leaders at a meeting presided over by the Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih. According to the official website of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, Members of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake, Dilith Jayaweera, Dr. M.L.A.M. Hizbullah, and Dr. Ramanathan Archchuna were present at this meeting.

During this session, Party Leaders exchanged views on the current economic landscape, including post-cyclone recovery challenges and global economic uncertainties. Discussions focused on key issues such as tariff adjustments, inflation management, external sector pressures, and the need for sustained structural reforms to ensure macroeconomic stability.
