COLOMBO (News 1st): The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) has launched an island-wide token strike starting from 8:00 AM today. The trade union action has been initiated in protest against the current medical officer transfer process.

Despite the strike, several essential health sectors remain unaffected. The GMOA confirmed that the strike will not be carried out at any maternity hospitals, children’s hospitals, the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama, specialized kidney units, military hospitals, or the National Institute of Mental Health.

Emergency treatment services will also continue to function as usual across all hospitals to ensure patient safety.

The Association warned that they will be compelled to intensify their trade union action if the Ministry of Health fails to provide a constructive intervention to resolve their grievances.
