COLOMBO (News 1st) - Plans are in place to replace the traditional paper tickets used by the railway service with a new digital system.

Prasanna Gunasena, the Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, says that modern ticket-checking equipment has also been introduced to railway stations.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the railway service and provide a more convenient and efficient experience for passengers.

The Deputy Minister further noted that steps are being taken to complete this project before the end of this year.

He explained that the new system will be introduced by further expanding the online booking system that were previously in place.

The pilot project is scheduled to launch in April, focusing on the Kelani Valley railway line.

It will first be implemented at stations in Narahenpita, Nugegoda, Makumbura, Homagama and Padukka.

Following the pilot phase, plans are underway to expand the digital ticketing system to the rest of the railway lines across the island.
