COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed officials to take all possible measures to safeguard Sri Lanka’s energy security by promoting efficient power use, particularly during the country’s peak electricity consumption period between 6.00pm and 10.00pm.
The President emphasized the need to raise public awareness on responsible energy use during peak hours and to secure the active participation of citizens in managing electricity demand, as part of broader efforts to maintain national energy security.
He noted that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has posed significant challenges for countries worldwide in ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies, and stressed that overcoming these challenges requires disciplined energy management at both institutional and individual levels.
President Dissanayake made these remarks while attending a discussion held this morning (23) at the Presidential Secretariat, convened to explore additional measures that can be taken to maintain energy security in the country.
During the meeting, attention was focused on further strengthening and practically implementing steps already taken by the government in recent weeks to manage energy consumption.
Special emphasis was placed on developing clear guidelines for the public service, ensuring more disciplined energy use across state institutions.
The President also instructed officials to engage with local government authorities to discuss and implement measures to regulate and manage energy consumption at the local level.
It was highlighted at the meeting that a substantial amount of electricity is consumed by advertising billboards and decorative lighting systems, and that restricting such usage could result in significant savings in national electricity consumption.
The discussion further addressed the need to reduce the use of non-essential street lighting in urban areas, along with proposals submitted by the Ministry of Transport and Highways aimed at improving energy management.
President Dissanayake underscored the importance of bringing together all relevant stakeholders to discuss alternative approaches and to move swiftly towards implementing effective solutions to manage energy consumption.
