COLOMBO (News 1st); The United Nations has commended the Sri Lankan government for upholding international humanitarian principles and maintaining neutrality during the rescue of Iranian nationals from the Bushehr vessel.

Marc-André Franche, the UN Resident Coordinator and Representative of the Secretary-General in Sri Lanka, welcomed Colombo’s conduct, noting that the government’s approach reflected its international commitments.

“We welcome the Sri Lankan Government’s focus on humanitarian assistance grounded in UN and international conventions, respecting its commitment to multilateralism, maintaining neutrality, and underscoring its dedication to peace,” Franche said.

He made these comments in the context of the rescue operation involving individuals on board the Iranian ship Bushehr, who were brought safely to Sri Lanka under what authorities described as humanitarian considerations.

Sri Lankan officials earlier confirmed that the Bushehr had requested permission to enter the country, and that the decision to facilitate the rescue and entry was taken in line with humanitarian policy.
