COLOMBO (News 1st) - Authorities have taken steps to question the suspects, including the second shooter arrested in connection with the Akuregoda double murder, under a 72-hour detention order.
The Colombo South Crimes Division says that following this, it is intended to seek an extended 90-day detention order for further investigations.
The second shooter, allegedly involved in the brutal assassination of attorney Buddhika Mallawarachchi and his spouse, was arrested yesterday during an operation in the Nakkala, Monaragala.
The arrest was carried out by the Monaragala Police following a tip-off received.
Three individuals, including the alleged shooter, were apprehended while hiding in a deserted house. The second shooter has been identified as a former member of the Navy.
The first shooter involved in the incident was previously arrested in Ambalangoda. Additionally, two individuals who transported the firearms and another individual who coordinated the logistics were also taken into police custody recently.
Attorney Buddhika Mallawarachchi and his spouse were brutally shot dead in Akuregoda, Thalangama, on the 13th of this month.
Investigations have revealed that Mallawarachchi the deceased lawyer, had represented the organized criminal known as "Karandeniya Sudda" in several court cases.
