COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka has officially repealed the Parliamentary Pensions Law, No. 1 of 1977, through the Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Act, No. 5 of 2026, which was certified on 17 February 2026 and published as a supplement to the Government Gazette on 20 February 2026.

According to the Act, the Parliamentary Pensions Law of 1977 is fully repealed.

The legislation further clarifies, “for the avoidance of doubt”, that any person who had been entitled to receive a pension under the Parliamentary Pensions Law, No. 1 of 1977, or under section 9 of Act No. 1 of 1982, or section 9 of Act No. 47 of 1990, and who was receiving such a pension prior to the commencement of the new law, will cease to receive that pension from the date the new Act takes effect.
