Child Abuse Cases in High Courts Cross 4,200 - NCPA Report

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has released a detailed report on child abuse cases currently before Sri Lanka’s High Courts.

NCPA Chairperson Preethi Inoka Ranasinghe said the report covers cases filed as of January 2026, along with those scheduled to be heard this month.

According to the report, a total of 4,289 child abuse cases are pending in High Courts across the country. 

Of these, 1,683 cases are due to be heard during this month alone.

The highest number of cases, 442 has been recorded from the Galle Magistrate’s Court. 

From this total, 101 cases are scheduled for hearings in the Galle High Court this month. 

The NCPA further stated that:
423 cases have been filed in Kurunegala High Court
414 cases in Kandy
229 cases in Kalutara
220 cases in Gampaha
216 cases in Matara
206 cases each in Badulla and Kegalle

However, the report does not include details such as the dates on which complaints were filed, the police stations that conducted the investigations, or when indictments were submitted in these cases.
