Sri Lanka Switches On CROPIX

Sri Lanka Switches On CROPIX: A National Brain for Agriculture Goes Live

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka  unveiled a landmark suite of digital systems designed to modernize its agriculture—from how data is collected and shared to how decisions are made in the field.

At a high‑level event co‑hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and funded by the Gates Foundation, the government launched the Agriculture Enterprise Architecture Framework, Agriculture Interoperability Framework, Data Sharing Policies, and CROPIX—a national platform poised to become the single source of truth for crop intelligence and sector‑wide coordination.

Together, these initiatives form the backbone of Sri Lanka’s emerging Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for agriculture, directly tackling long‑standing pain points such as fragmented databases, institutional silos, and inconsistent standards that have slowed service delivery and policy response.

At the core of the rollout is the Agriculture Enterprise Architecture Framework—a strategic blueprint that aligns people, processes, data, and technology across the sector. Its purpose: to ensure future digital investments are interoperable, scalable, and future‑ready, so that ministries, departments, and programs don’t build in isolation.

Complementing this, the Agriculture Interoperability Framework and newly introduced Data Sharing Policies set the rules of the road for how systems talk to each other—enabling secure, standardized, and trusted exchange of data between government entities and digital platforms.

The result is a governance layer that moves data quickly and safely to where it’s needed most, from planning desks to paddy fields.

Anchoring the ecosystem is CROPIX — Crop Resources, Optimizing operations, through Precise Information eXchange System.

CROPIX operationalizes the new architecture by bringing together:

National crop registry

Cultivation and production data, Forecasting tools. Extension services, Near real‑time field reporting

APIs and Open Data

Available via web and mobile, CROPIX connects farmers, extension officers, planners, and policymakers around a single, trusted source of agricultural data.

It’s designed to turn information into action—whether that’s a farmer receiving timely advisory, an extension officer validating field conditions, or a policy team stress‑testing production forecasts.
