COLOMBO (News 1st); A series of coordinated, silent protests swept across multiple cities today as parents of Grade 6 students demanded the immediate implementation of the proposed Grade 6 module-based education system.

The main demonstration unfolded outside the Ministry of Education in Battaramulla, where a large group of parents—representing the collective voice of 2026 Grade 6 students nationwide—staged a calm yet powerful silent protest urging authorities to reverse delays and restore what they describe as a “long-awaited modern reform” for their children.

“A new education reform finally reached our children. They even received the books. But due to certain social issues these materials are disappearing again. There are nearly 300,000 children in Sri Lanka. If this system is removed, when they leave school years later, they will only hold a 20-year-old education certificate.”

Another parent voiced heartache over the sudden setback.

“We are asking only for justice for our children. If there are shortcomings, tell us the reason and refine it. We want to know. It hurts us as parents to see their hopes being crushed like this.”

The protesting parents marched to the Presidential Secretariat to hand over a petition signed by nearly 10,000 parents, demanding official clarity and an immediate decision from the authorities.

The demand for swift implementation of the new education reform was not limited to Battaramulla.

Similar protests took place in Malwana, Kurunegala, Kegalle, and Wariyapola, signalling a rapidly growing national movement.
