COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan authorities have launched a formal investigation into a fatal police shooting in Welikanda, appointing an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to lead the inquiry.
The incident occurred around 6:00 PM yesterday (12), when police opened fire on a suspect who allegedly attempted to attack officers with a sharp weapon. A
ccording to police, the shooting was carried out in self-defense after the suspect ignored repeated orders and charged at officers.
Prior to the confrontation, police had pursued a motorcycle carrying three individuals who fled after disregarding a stop order.
Two suspects managed to escape, while the third entered his residence and allegedly armed himself before confronting law enforcement.
The injured suspect was rushed to Welikanda Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
He has been identified as a 27-year-old resident of Welikanda, reportedly linked to drug trafficking activities.
Authorities confirmed that the firearm used in the shooting has been secured for forensic analysis. Meanwhile, the two fugitives have been identified, and efforts are underway to apprehend them.
