COLOMBO (News 1st): The Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) has raised concerns that 48% of archaeological sites in Sri Lanka have not yet been officially gazetted.

Accordingly, the Committee has directed that a report be submitted within one month, detailing all sites that have been gazetted as well as those that have not.

Details pertaining to this matter were discussed during a COPA session in Parliament reviewing the Auditor General’s reports for the years 2021, 2022, and 2023 and examining the current performance of the Department of Archaeology.

The Committee has also recommended that a report be provided on the sites proposed for nomination to UNESCO as World Heritage sites, along with the relevant documentation.
