COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police have issued an urgent appeal to motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution during the festive season, following a sharp rise in road accidents compared to last year.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Traffic Control & Road Safety), W.P.J. Senadheera, revealed that road accidents have increased by 271 incidents this year, despite a slight reduction in severe crashes.

"Most fatal and serious accidents occur due to driver negligence and lack of attention. Pedestrians remain the most vulnerable, accounting for 21% of annual road fatalities, while motorcyclists and pillion riders make up 39%."

The police have identified drunk driving and substance abuse as major contributors to these accidents.

In response, a special program to detect intoxicated drivers is now in operation.

Breathalyzer shortages that previously hindered enforcement have been resolved, and checks are being conducted regularly.
