COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Disaster Management Centre says a program has been launched to reactivate the tsunami warning towers that are currently out of operation.

Director General of the Disaster Management Centre, Retired Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda, said assistance will also be sought from India for this initiative.

Following the 2004 tsunami disaster, 77 tsunami warning towers were installed along Sri Lanka’s coastal belt to alert the public in the event of a tsunami.

However, all these towers are presently inactive.
