COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Railways says the Medawachchiya–Talaimannar train service is expected to resume within the next three weeks.
The Department’s Roads and Maintenance Division said repairs are currently underway to restore damage caused to railway lines by the recent disaster.
Repair work has also begun on two damaged bridges along the Puttalam line.
Once these repairs are completed, train services, which are currently operating only up to Nattandiya, are expected to be extended to Puttalam.
The Railway Department said the Upcountry Railway line has suffered the most severe damage.
Reconstruction work has been divided into several phases and has already commenced.
Accordingly, reconstruction is underway on the Rambukkana–Kadugannawa, Gampola–Nawalapitiya, and Kotagala–Ambewela sections.
Repair work has also begun on damaged sections of the Kandy–Matale railway line.
Meanwhile, train operations on the Northern and Eastern railway lines have been fully restored, following the dedicated efforts of railway employees and military personnel.
