COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka mourns the loss of one of its most celebrated performing artists, Kala Suri Satishchandra Edirisinghe, who passed away early this (23) morning at the age of 84.
Born on February 10, 1941, in Kelaniya, Edirisinghe was an alumnus of Dharmaloka Vidyalaya.
His artistic journey began with the radio drama Seri Vanija, before making his mark on stage with Vessanthara and entering cinema through the iconic film 'Sampatha'.
Over the decades, he showcased his versatility across stage, television, and film, earning admiration as an actor, playwright, director, and educator.
His unforgettable portrayals in popular teledramas such as Paligu Manike and Susima remain etched in the hearts of audiences.
As a playwright, his works include Bakathapas, Attikka Mal Pipila, Hotabari Yudde, Tahanchi, and Sokkano Rajano, which enriched Sinhala theatre.
Beyond acting, Edirisinghe contributed as a scriptwriter, director, and teacher, leaving an indelible mark on Sri Lankan arts and culture. His legacy reflects a lifetime dedicated to elevating the performing arts.
The remains of Satishchandra Edirisinghe are currently at his residence in Nunugamugoda, Kelaniya, for public homage. Final rites will be held on Friday afternoon at Borella Cemetery.
A true icon who shaped the golden era of Sinhala drama and cinema — may he attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana.
