COLOMBO (News 1st); The Government of Japan provided hygiene kits and relief items valued at USD 500,000.

The handover took place during a meeting between Ambassador Akio Isomata and Dr. Susil Ranasinghe, Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, with UNICEF Representative Emma Brigham also in attendance.

This contribution forms part of a USD 2.5 million emergency grant announced by Japan on 16 December, in partnership with UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The aid targets communities severely affected by recent disasters across Central, Uva, Eastern, Western, and North Western Provinces.

Through UNICEF, Japan will support WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiatives and child protection programs, including child-friendly spaces and psychosocial support.

The assistance aims to ensure access to safe water, repair damaged water supply facilities, and prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases through hygiene promotion.

Ambassador Isomata emphasized that this aid addresses urgent needs while safeguarding public health. He reaffirmed Japan’s solidarity with Sri Lanka during this challenging period, pledging continued cooperation to help vulnerable communities recover.
