COLOMBO (News 1st); The adverse weather gripping Sri Lanka has claimed 26 lives, with 4 people still missing, according to Leader of the House, Minister Bimal Ratnayake.
Speaking in Parliament this morning (27), Ratnayake warned that the figure could rise as rescue operations continue.
“As of this morning, 26 deaths have been reported. In Badulla District alone, 16 fatalities occurred. Earlier, Kadugannawa recorded 6 deaths. Four individuals remain missing in Nuwara Eliya,” Ratnayake said.
The Minister revealed that 140 disaster-struck locations have been identified, with 97 sites already inspected by the National Building Research Organization (NBRO).
Multiple roads in the Eastern Province remain closed due to flooding and landslides.
NBRO has strongly urged the public not to visit disaster sites, citing safety risks.
Authorities continue to deploy emergency teams to affected areas, while warnings remain in place for heavy rains and strong winds across the island.
