Batticaloa's Rugam Records 300 mm Rainfall in 24 Hours

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka continues to reel under extreme weather, with the latest 24-hour rainfall report showing staggering figures across multiple districts.

The highest recorded rainfall was 300.1 mm in Rugam (Batticaloa District), signaling severe flood risk in the Eastern Province.

Hettipola recorded 266 mm, while Mahadowa recorded 262 mm.

In addition Kandeketiya recorded 259.1 mm while Ulhitiya recorded 224.4 mm.

Hydro catchment areas such as Randenigala (200 mm) and Rantambe (267 mm) also reported heavy inflows, raising concerns about reservoir levels.

The Department of Meteorology warns that persistent rains and strong winds will continue, urging the public to avoid flood-prone areas and heed official advisories.
