COLOMBO (News 1st) Four people have succumbed to their injuries from incident at the Lower Kadugannawa area where a rock fell on a house and a shop this morning.
The rockfall occurred at around 8:45 this morning along the Colombo–Kandy main road, causing significant disruption to traffic in the area.
Rescue operations to free those trapped commenced this morning with the intervention of the Army, Sri Lanka Police, Fire Control Unit of the Kandy Municipal Council , Disaster Management Centre, and local residents.
Individuals trapped in the earth were rescued on several occasions.
Of these, four people are currently receiving treatment at Mawanella Base Hospital.
Kegalle District Secretary , Jagath Herath said that it is suspected that about 11 people may have been present there at the time of the accident.
Rescue operations are still underway.
The Additional District Secretary requests the general public to refrain from visiting the accident site.
